Hanging Around

Why did you not go
when I sent you flying
shrugged off your implorings
tightly closed my fountain
hurled you icily into the past?

Why did you not disappear
when I closed my eyes
when I pulled the blanket
over my head?

Why are your insults
still waiting outside my door
like reminders of unpaid accounts
like discarded gum
hanging around
to cling to my boots once more?

Why are you still there
waiting, downfaced,

repentant?

I’ve paid my dues
so many times

in salt and tears
why are you still hanging around
like last year’s nasal drip?
Come in, wretched poem.
