and grandparents

everywhere

clasp hands

hold breath

as little fingers

press innocent notes

little feet skip,

flashes of pink

and audacity

bow,

trip off

as behind scenes,

teachers fuss

with costumes

safety pins

whispered instructions

 

There’s something

about school concerts

that wipes the world clean

each year anew

like rain

after a hot season

of dust and sorrow

 

a breath of freshness

in the air
