Charred Elements
Air, water, fire and earth
these are the spirits of my life
by them I am blown leaves,
a pitcher that leaks,
fury melts me into fused rock
my words scattered ashes
My breath an accidental vapor,
my sleep a wisp of smoke, I am in turn
a desert, a comet, a sun storm, a bush fire,
a lump of coal, an earthquake, a fossil
With twenty six symbols I wield charcoal
to describe, to understand, to control,
but I am weak, the wind drowns my voice
my thoughts obliterated, consumed,
my prayer a mourner’s lament
