Canadian Pacific Railway
Silent the world
as dawn whispers over ghost peaks
giants of night
all slumber still
only the drip of rain on roof
disturbs our log cabin silence
Then from the west
a rush of wheels
steel on steel
into the valley
the morning train
on its way to Jasper
to Calgary and further east
Cutting the snow
with a deep mournful voice
bleating out its echo
three trombone notes
preceding roar and click
round the bends
then diminishing
like a dark silver snake song
back into the silence
As we turn over
check our watches
pull up our blankets
and slip back
into another hour of dream
waiting for sunrise
to creep over the Rockies
