Blinkered New Year

Why should we tell of brown polluted rivers

when all the world is crying oil spill seas

why imitate the warning watchdogs’ barking

while solar flares and snow storms blind and freeze

The future’s here today why preach tomorrow

let’s celebrate Sylvester with cheap wine

we’ll leave the water running in the bathtub

until the taps run dry or choke with slime

The best place in these times is under blankets

we’ll turn the TV off, close Google news

if only Nero had taught us how to fiddle

we’d play a lullaby before we snooze

Hoping that while we dream someone will pull the plug out

and scrub the bathtub clean, fit for one more year to use
