Ball Games
Why all this fuss
about a small yellow ball
flying back and forth
in the chalk-lined perimeters
of Wimbledon center court
ninety thousand eyes
fixed on its frantic dash?
Why all this celebration
about a black and white ball
eleven red shirted man
eleven blue shirted men
chasing its bouncing trajectories
across the grass of a Euro pitch
millions watching and cheering?
Why all this shoulder shrugging
disinterest, turning to other matters
about the fate of a tiny blue ball
whirling in space at the edge
of an unsportsmanlike galaxy
billions of game-addicted viewers
switching channels to seek something
more worth taking bets about?
