Without You
I know you can’t hear me
singing our own song
fish flying in the spray
gulls swooping, diving
as a softly setting sun plays
Bach’s aria on a g-string
I know you can’t see me
on the long road home
from the hospital
tears misting my glasses
as life unwinds back
We were so young so carefree
full of invincible tomorrows
There is a window
half open
between the room of now
the sights and sounds of then
as I lean out
into the yet unseen, unfelt
without you
Even if we’d had time
to say goodbye
would we have said it
unbelieving as we were
as I still am?
So many miles away
down this long road
