Tell Me It Was Not a Dream
Last night, awakened from my sleep
I left my bed and floated up
Last night, awakened from my sleep
I floated out over the world
And I became the smoke that curling
From the rooftops kissed the clouds
And I became the mist that rolling
From the ocean wets the heath
Oh tell me, tell me,
Tell me it was not a dream
Last night, awakened from my sleep
I floated up into the stars
And landed in a meadow drunk with sound
Where seaweed trees with fronds
Of many hues held goldfish birds
Anemones with waving fingers
And from each a strand of music fluttered
That trembled in my ears, a most
Delightful choir, until I lost my
Shyness and began to sing with them
Oh tell me, tell me,
Tell me it was not a dream
Last night, awakened from my sleep
I tasted melted snow from mountain peaks
Drank bubble streams from glaciers and drifts
Then cut a sheaf of wheat with golden wing
Spread it with honey from treetop hive.
I lingered in a garden dripping figs
Nibbled from papaya, coconut and peach
Last night I tasted wild how freedom tastes
The sweetest wine that ever passed my lips
Oh tell me it was not a dream!
