Days I Avoid

the curtains of my window

to tomorrow hang heavy and still

like burlap, tarpaulin, leather

no wind stirs them

fact is heavier than imagination

each year i want this day to pass

but this is a big one

as i slip into a new decade

without fanfare, clock on steeple face

stirring in darkness, minute hand

trembling in premonition, then clunk

one minute past midnight

and i’m still here

self proclaimed atheist that i am

still every day of atonement

a convicted unbeliever i lie low

air heavy and motionless

perhaps the one i don’t believe in

won’t notice me hiding in this corner

holding my breath

as yet another year slips safely by
