Chernobyl

Yesterday there were
frogs in the pond
birds in the trees
horses in the stable

It was dark when
I went to draw
the curtain but
the red gore on
the horizon made
it as bright as day

and then it rained
muck from the sky
and we had to leave
in haste and there
was no time to fill
the horse trough
or the bird bath

We never returned
thanked God for our lives
and examined our skin
every day in the mirror
twenty years passed like
yesterday and still
I wake sweating
in the night
wondering what
bent horses
roam those empty hills
