Blotting Paper Nights
Dreams with landscapes embedded
smudge into my night
storms on summer afternoons
gathering in cloudless skies
rolling in, accumulated dark spools
filled with angst or grief
a sudden shower of stinging wetness,
a brush of vinegar melody
Unexpected, they drench my sleep with
tears from seasons almost forgotten
then in a broom-full of wind,
a dog’s bark, a car engine scratching
catching in its fitful morning growl
they dissipate, mist on window panes,
dew, snowflake memories, leaving
but the vaguest recollection of pain
or rain, a scurry evaporating out of the lens
And then they’re gone
