All the World's a Sandwich
We sit around
discussing
all the things you do
all the things you say
We don’t want to feel too sad
so we smile, laugh, hold each other
Someone hands around bourekas, pours the coffee
we munch pistachios, peanuts, fruit
with mouths full of memories
Outside its raining
people come people go
We talk about other things
children, grandchildren
trips overseas, the best places
to buy groceries
the coming elections. Will there
eventually be some sanity?
Someone remembers what
you used to say about that
we smile, laugh, hold each other
then it’s time to leave
until we meet again
coats buttoned tightly
against the wind
