Adrift

Two rowers in a storm-tossed boat

one blind, the other deaf

yelling and waving fists

craft taking water with their rocking

No word from above to guide their way

no counselor or ombudsman

no pact of peace or marriage vow

eyes red, voices hoarse

Too late the vessel rocks side to side

an icy brine now covers it

shouts now drowning in the storm

As they, their flags, their covenants

vows to love and obey

plunge headlong to a common fate
