A Horse to Remember

Among the best

my cart-held horse

strains and plods

to bring the fodder

for their snorting souls

Their brushed gleaming flanks

haughty nostrils steaming at the bit

to rocket from starter’s gate

around and around
in wild jockey-spurred color
to win by a nose
a photo finish

a bunch of tickets torn up

lying in the dust

Among the best

it’s Ned I’ll remember

his humble back

broad shoulder always there

lips curled in salivating grin
eating a carrot from my hand

his eyes almost touching mine
